Merry Christmas! Chicken Soup for Everyone!
Merry Christmas everyone. I hope you all got the gifts you were yearning for. In case you didn't get the gift of science fiction (I did, with three new hardcover books to get me through the cold New England winter) I have a gift for you. I've put up a new story on my Free Story page, this one called " Chicken Soup for Mars and Venus."
This story is part of a series I call the Coordinator Group universe, although the Group doesn't make an appearance in this story. I have a vague notion of writing the story of the Coordinator Group in a novel. I have always been interested in how we invest a group with political power, and the Group is my idea of a mercenary government that could work, as long as everyone find them useful.
I have a good idea how the Coordinator Group yields political power to the authoritarian Sunjammers, who give rise to the doomed Alpha Centauri mission depicted in MACHINE INTELLIGENCE. But I only have two stories published that even mention the Group, and " Language Barrier" is a bit off the storyline for that tale, so most of the novel will be new stuff. The hero of that book would probably be the unnamed protagonist from "City of Reason." So I guess I have to give him a name before I start.
Anyway, enjoy the story, and enjoy the rest of your holidays.

Thank you for the free story! I enjoyed it. I have to admit I suspected the Damager was a woman, but I like that it wasn't really paramount to the story. It was just two people working to solve the problem - what a concept! ;D
I'm glad you liked it. I admit I could have used the situation set up by the title more effectively if I'd made the characters into stereotypes but I couldn't bring myself to do it.
I'm so glad you didn't. That's what made it good imo. I like when I think something's going one way and it winds up going differently.
I can't believe I hadn't checked out your short-story page until now. There's some fun stuff in there - very Niven-esque - that would make a great collection.
